An air-pulse generator and an inflated vest attached to the generator via hoses make up the machine. The vest rapidly expands and contracts, up to 20 times per second, as a result of air being sent via the hoses by the generator. The strain on the chest caused by this quick inflating and deflation is comparable to clapping. The mucus is not only dislodged from the airway walls by the vibrations but it is also assisted in ascending into the major airways by them. The vest is typically worn for five minutes before clearing the mucus with a cough or huff.

Sessions last 20 to 30 minutes on average.
